In 2015, the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act increased energy efficiency requirements of water heaters manufactured after April 16 of that year. Many are larger, slightly more expensive and have a higher EF rating. Regardless of whether you have a new or old model, we rely on our water heaters for everyday tasks. What are the most common water heater issues and which ones indicate it’s time for an upgrade?
1. LEAKING TANK
If you notice standing water around your water heater, that’s not a good sign. When the tank has a leak, there’s no easy fix – it’s best to replace the water heater, especially if it is past the general life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.
2. SEDIMENT BUILD-UP
When sediment builds inside the tank, low water levels, noises and smell can result. Every time the water heater runs, this residue is burned up. You can fix this issue is by draining the tank with the heat off. Flush out the cold water intake valve until the sediment is gone.
3. NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
The first thing to do when you notice that you water is lukewarm or cold is to check the thermostat. If the solution is not a simple temperature adjustment, you may need to upgrade the size of your water heater or have the heating element repaired.
4. DISCOLORED WATER
No one wants to see dirty water coming out of their sinks or showerhead. If it’s discolored hot or cold, it’s likely a problem with your water source rather than the heater. Otherwise, the anode rod may need to be replaced after a bad reaction with the sulfates in your water.
5. LOUD NOISES
Do you hear pops, bangs, whines or gurgles when your water heater is in use? These noises are probably the result of hard water sediment or the buildup of scale in the tank.
