Installing adequate insulation is one of the most effective ways to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home. However, when it comes to choosing the right insulation for your project, things can get a little bit confusing. With so many different types of insulation on the market, it can be difficult to decide which type is best suited for the job. Below you will find brief overviews of each of the three most popular types of insulation – foam, batts or loose fill.

Foam Board

Foam board insulation is usually made from polystyrene, polyisocyanurate or polyurethane. This type of insulation comes in rigid sheets which can easily be cut to down to smaller sizes with a utility knife. The most common uses for foam board insulation include insulating unfinished foundation walls, floors, ceilings and low slope roofs, as well as between the siding and wall studs on the exterior of the home.

Blanket Insulation

Blanket insulation, which is usually made from fiberglass, comes in batts or rolls. This insulation is flexible and relatively easy to install, making it one of the most commonly used types of insulation. Typical uses for blanket insulation include insulating between wall studs and attic or floor joists.

Loose Fill

Loose fill insulation is usually made up of small particles of cellulose, fiberglass or mineral wool. The main benefit of loose fill over other types of insulation is that it can conform to just about any space. This makes it ideal for upgrading existing structures. Typical uses for loose fill insulation include inside wall cavities, over attic floors, and in places where other types of insulation would be difficult to install. Loose fill insulation usually requires professional installation.
