Increasingly homeowners are considering whether a heat pump would be a good alternative to the traditional air conditioning-furnace system. While they can be more efficient than furnaces for heating in the winter, especially in a moderate climate, they also can provide efficient cooling.

In cold weather, heat pumps work by collecting heat from the outdoors and transferring it inside. They also do the reverse. During warm weather, they take heat from inside your house and pump it outside.  This form of heating and cooling can reduce the amount of power you’re using by as much as 30 or 40 percent, likewise reducing your utility bills.

But should you choose a heat pump?  A heat pump may cost more than a standard air conditioner to install. However, it will operate more efficiently, especially for heating, and save you money through reduced energy costs.  Heat pumps typically dehumidify better than standard central air conditioners. This results in lower energy use and better cooling in summer months.

Also, an air conditioner will only help you in the summer, and a heat pump will give you benefits all year long, especially when coupled with a furnace for use during excessively cold weather.

There is still some time before summer hits to research further options for your air conditioning needs. Glasco Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. is available to offer expert advice on your heating and cooling needs, and will be happy to discuss heat pumps with you.
