When your home HVAC system isn’t quite performing like it used to, it’s easy to get a little worried. After all, nobody wants to have to buy an entirely new system. But with record-setting temperatures around the nation, nobody wants to suffer through the tough months. Knowing whether to repair or replace your system will help you stay comfortable and make the money-wise decision.

Replacing your HVAC system isn’t always the best way to go. If your unit is less than 8-10 years old, consider repairs before jumping to a new air conditioner. You want to avoid a situation where you’re investing in new equipment when the problem could have been fixed for far less money.

Is the house losing efficiency, or does it seem hotter than usual? The problem could be with the insulation in your house or the air flow through the ducts, as opposed to the actual HVAC units. Does it stop periodically or make loud clanking noises? The problem could be any number of loose parts after normal wear and tear. Call in an HVAC specialist before looking to change out your system. Repairs are cheaper than new units and take much less time to get your house back to its optimum temperature.

At the same time, if the needed repairs appear to be major, a new high-efficiency system can save you money in the long run. If your system is more than 10 years old and you’re not experiencing the quality of air you’d like, replacement should be a serious consideration. Also, if your home has excessive dust or humidity problems, a new system could greatly improve your home climate. Replacing an old system with a new one will also allow you to save money on energy bills by using a programmable thermostat or zoning system — so you’re not unnecessarily cooling the house, or parts of it, when no one is home or in certain rooms or areas.
