Start With Your Thermostat Settings

Often, the reason a cooling system blows warm air is simply an incorrect thermostat setting. It is easy for someone in your household to accidentally bump a switch or change a program without realizing it.

Check the display on your thermostat. Ensure the system is set to “Cool” and not “Heat” or simply “On.” If the fan is set to “On,” the blower will circulate air constantly, even when the outdoor unit is not actively cooling the air. Switch the fan setting to “Auto” so it only runs during an actual cooling cycle.

If your thermostat is set correctly but your A/C is still not blowing cold air, check your electrical panel. Your cooling system requires a significant amount of power. Shrubs, weeds, and tree branches can also grow too close to the equipment. This blocks the necessary airflow required to release heat into the outdoor air. Clear away any vegetation or debris so there is at least two feet of clear space around the entire unit.

While inspecting the outdoor unit, listen to it run. If you hear loud grinding, buzzing, or hissing sounds, turn the power off. Hissing often points to a refrigerant leak, which requires a licensed professional to locate and repair safely.
