With the heating season here, it’s time to figure out how to best generate the most energy savings possible. Your programmable thermostat is a great tool for conserving energy, and unless you’re familiar with all the ways it can save you money, you may not be using it to the full potential. If you don’t have one yet, upgrading to a programmable thermostat can help you save up to 30 percent on your utility bills.

Programmable thermostats are designed to adapt to your daily lifestyle. You set them to turn off when you leave the house for the day and then re-activate shortly before you return. However, this is only the most basic way to use them.

By breaking your day down into four different periods, you can come up with the ideal daily heating and cooling schedule. You can use more efficient settings during the day when the house is unoccupied and the night when everyone is asleep.  Then during the morning and evening, you can set it to a temperature that’s more comfortable. Don’t try to use more than four different phases during a day, as that can reduce the overall efficiency.

You can set a schedule for each day of the week. They can all be the same, or you can adjust for variances on particular days when you know you’ll be late.

You can also use the hold feature on your thermostat to make different types of changes. A temporary hold will cancel the programmed settings temporarily while a vacation hold can be used to create a more energy-efficient mode if you’re going to be gone for a few days.
